Ten tips for a healthy lifestyle

How to maintain a healthy lifestyle

Our fast-paced world means that we aren't getting enough sleep, don't eat enough, drink too much alcohol, and smoke too many cigarettes. We don’t care enough about our health.

It is very hard to find a balanced diet and exercise routine when you work fulltime and do all these things at the same time. It's even harder when you are stressed because your mind tells you that you cannot handle the situation anymore. So we feel guilty and give up.

If you feel like something is wrong with your body, then it probably is. Ask your doctor for his/her opinion about your current situation. If you find nothing unusual, it could be stress from your job.

Some people think that they are lucky because their jobs allow them to go to gym regularly or they have some friends who help them to keep fit. But those people are actually lucky. They don't have problems. They had everything under control. I wish everyone could become like them. Most people don't know how balance work and life. Many people end up with bad habits which eventually lead to diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and many others.

These are some tips to help you improve your life.

  1. You should get 7 hours of sleep per night minimum and 8 hours maximum. This includes good sleeping habits and avoiding caffeine for the last hour before bed. Caffeine blocks melatonin, which can make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Also, make sure that your bedroom is clean and dark. Blackout curtains are a must, especially if you work late at nights.
  2. Eat well - Have breakfast every morning. Avoid sugary foods, fried foods, processed foods, and white breads. For lunch, try to include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Afternoon snacks are recommended to be rich in protein and fiber, such as nuts, seeds, beans, fish and dairy products. Avoid junk food like chips, candies and cakes.
  3. Get enough water. Many people don't get enough. Water aids in weight loss, skin health, digestion, and keeps our skin young and supple. You can lose weight by drinking six glasses of water per day. The best way to measure your hydration level is by checking the color of your urine. A yellow urine color indicates that you are dehydrated. An orange urine color means that you are slightly dehydrated. Pink urine means that your hydration level is normal. Red urine means that you are overhydrated. Clear urine means that you're highly hydrated.
  4. Exercise - Regular physical activity has been proven to increase energy levels and reduce depression. Walking is an easy workout that can also improve your mood. Walking is easy, but it takes effort and concentration. Your brain needs to focus on walking while breathing slowly and deeply. Walking for 30 minutes at a steady pace can help you burn between 100 to 150 calories. Slowly build up and start slow. Do not forget to stretch after exercising to prevent injuries.
  5. Positive thinking is crucial for mental health. Positive thinking creates a positive environment within ourselves. Negative thoughts can cause anxiety and drain our energy. You can stay motivated by thinking about what you want to achieve. Break down the tasks into smaller steps if you feel overwhelmed by all the new tasks. Remember that you are bound to fail sometimes but just pick yourself up and start again.
  6. Learn to say no - We often get so busy that we do not even realize how much time we waste doing unimportant things. It is important you can say no when it is necessary. However, saying "no", does not necessarily mean you are rude. A No means that you can't take care of something now. You can always find other ways to complete the job later. Be clear about your boundaries. You can ask someone to help you. Delegate the work to someone else.
  7. Take care to your body. Keep an eye on your diet. Healthy eating habits will increase your metabolism and help you lose weight. Avoid heavy and oily foods. They can increase cholesterol levels. You should eat three meals per day and two snacks each day. Around 2000 to 2500 calories should be consumed each day.
  8. Meditation can be a great stress relief and can help reduce anxiety. You can relax your mind by simply sitting still with your closed eyes. This exercise will give you clarity of thought, which is very helpful in reaching decisions. Meditation can help you be calmer, happier, and more productive.
  9. Breakfast is the most important meal you should eat each day. Skipping breakfast may cause you to eat more at lunchtime. It is never too late to eat a balanced breakfast as long as you eat within 1 hour of waking. Eaten breakfast will boost your energy and help you manage your hunger.
  10. Eat clean food - Food affects our moods more than we know. Avoid junk food, artificial ingredients and foods that are high in preservatives. These products can cause acid reflux and increase cravings. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals that improve overall health.
